things that keep me up at night
For this publication, I first composed the poem that will serve as the basis for the book.
The research process began through conducting primary and secondary research; getting immigrants' insight into their experiences with the Express Entry system through interviews and studying the step-by-step process from the information provided by the government. Acquiring insight from both areas allowed me to comprehend the scope of the process and begin formulating a way to address the needs of future applicants.
Before beginning the design portion, I established a set of values that will serve as a framework for everything that will be involved with this project, as well as a starting visual design system.
For the artwork, I experimented with water and inks to create blotches that represent a busy mind. As the story progresses, the ink drawings go from sporadic and sparse to chaotic and obscuring.
To further accentuate the chaotic nature, I experimented with typographic distortion techniques by printing snippets from the poem and placing these on top of the scanner. I would then move the cutout along as it was scanned. Depending on what the movement is, it can stretch, duplicate, and create wave effects with the type.
Using the scans of various words in the book, I created GIFS to add a layer of interactivity to the EPUB, taking inspiration from glitch typography. This would reinforce the feeling of cognitive dissonance within the book.
To aid the reader in their journey through the publication, I drew these navigational icons from ink and scanned them for use in the book.
